Woody Allen made an animated movie that hits all the tones of a Woody Allen movie. Is that a good thing? Eeeehhhh feels out of place in a kids movie. But Antz isn’t egregiously bad? It’s not great. Not good either? Let’s get into it Compliment sandwich time: the voice acting is quite good. Looking through that cast list there’s really no disappointments and a few surprises Some of the moments of animation were quite lovely, mostly the what looked like hand drawn backdrops. Some were just gorgeous but on the animation… there was something really really off about the ants. Their faces were off-putting. I can’t put my finger on why but something felt off. And I know we could do better in 1998 Toy Story was ‘95
The story and plot are fine. Another odd-couple movie with two people from different parts of society falling in love and saying NO to societal norms. I dig it. Very fine message. Also support the ant worker revolution and the free thinker movement. Very nice. But that’s kinda the problem. Everything just felt fine nothing felts great. Nothing was moving which this genre certainly can be VERY moving.
In the end, It’s a Woody Allen movie starring Woody Allen playing a Woody Allen type if that’s your thing you’re gonna love it. If it’s not, you’re gonna wonder why that ant has such a heavy New York accent and is so neurotic about everything and talks so fast. It’s certainly not without value. I don’t feel I wasted my time and I’d love to watch this with a group of people drinking and making Woody Allen jokes doing a Woody Allen impression
