Nine Days (2021)🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽

This wonderfully original movie came out of nowhere to completely blow me away and move this cold dead heart. This movie implores its audience to appreciate life in all its peaks and valleys and the little moments especially

Nine Days takes place in a purgatory-like setting (it’s not defined) where we follow Will (Winston Duke). Will’s, and others like him, duty is to choose someone to receive the gift of life.

Winston Duke’s performance as a pained and conflicted judge (essentially) is phenomenal. Viewers can see and feel his struggle as his heart battles his mind as he must choose a new candidate after his personal favorite tragically died (it’s not a spoiler it’s in act 1)

Zazie Beets stars alongside Duke as Emma, one of the candidates for life. And she plays the perfect counter to Dukes pragmatism and shines in her role. Emma is so full of life (despite not being alive yet) and her personality overflows off the screen. Perfect casting

Edson Oda (writer/director) presents us with a compelling narrative without any bells and whistles and implores its audience to appreciate the little things that make life wonderfully. Normally, I don’t care very much for that. But this movie sucked me in and moved me

Speaking of moving, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention just how beautiful the score is. Proper musical queues never fail to make me misty-eyed and this piece of corn shed a corny tear or two.

All bad jokes aside, phenomenal score.

Oh and Benedict Wong is in this. Who doesn’t love Benedict Wong? His character is a delight

So if you need explosions, fight scenes, loud noises, car chases and lots and lots of family, then I think you know the joke I’m making. If you don’t, do yourself a favor, watch Nine Days, then grab a beer, put your toes in the sand and just enjoy the day.
